Can you Dab CBD? The Answers May Surprise You

Can You Dab CBD? The Surprising Answers

CBD products are extremely diverse. From CBD oil tinctures to smokable hemp flower, and topical CBD salves. CBD is extracted from hemp flower in order to make products like oil and salves. This extract can also be processed in a way that creates CBD concentrates like CBD Shatter, CBD wax, and other sorts of “dabs.”

Concentrates are very potent products. If you are looking for a very potent and concentrated product CBD dabs may be right for you. They may not be the best option for people who are new to CBD or inexperienced with concentrates. However, there are some ways of using concentrates that are more friendly to novices.

What are CBD Dabs and CBD Concentrates?

The term “dabs” refers to the consistency and consumption method of a cannabis extract. “Dabs” can be made from hemp or marijuana. They are not a new product for the marijuana market. However, Plain Jane is one of the few companies selling CBD dabs. Whether a concentrate is THC or CBD, here are some of the common names for them:

Types of Dabs/Concentrates

Shatter

Shatter often has a glassy and breakable consistency. However, some types of shatter are more sticky. Shatter can be tricky to handle because it may “shatter” when you go to break off a piece.

Shatter

Wax

Wax is a semitranslucent to opaque extract that has a harder consistency. It is not unlike cable wax, and some are harder or softer than others.

Budder

Budder is softer than wax and has a consistency similar to butter or margarine.

Live Resin

Live resin is a type of concentrate that has a thick sauce with some small crystals mixed in.

Diamonds

Diamonds are similar to live resin but have larger cannabinoid crystals. These are highly sought after and are one of the most expensive types of dabs.

Types of CBD Concentrates

CBD concentrates come in different compositions in addition to different physical textures. Products like Isolate CBD Shatter contain only CBD. CBD Isolate Shatter does not contain other cannabinoids or terpenes. This means it does not have much flavor. It also means that the THC levels are undetectable. In addition to Isolate CBD Shatter, a powder form of CBD Isolate exists. This powder is not intended to be smoked, vaped, or dabbed.

Another term used for CBD Isolate is “T-Free” or “THC-Free.” Products like THC-Free CBD Wax are thicker and more malleable than Isolate CBD Shatter. Many are interested in CBD isolate products for reasons such as sensitivity to THC or minimizing the risk of a false-positive drug test.

Full Spectrum CBD Shatter differs from isolate and contains cannabinoids and terpenes that are naturally found in hemp plant extracts. They are legally required to contain less than 0.3% delta-9-THC, like all hemp products.

Using CBD Shatter, CBD Wax, and Other CBD Dabs

There are a few different methods for using CBD shatter and other types of CBD dabs.

  • Dab bong (torch)
A dab bong is a bang with a special type of bowl that is meant to be heated prior to placing a tiny dab of concentrate inside. One popular way to prepare the bowl is to heat it with a torch.
  • Dab bong (e-nail)
Some bowls for dab bongs are made to fit an electronic coil. The coil is placed around the bowl and turned on with an electronic controller box. This heats the bowl to a stable temperature for dabbing.
  • Wax Pens and Honey Sticks
Wax pens are like a vape device, but with special coils intended for concentrates. These electronic devices are very easy to use for beginners and cost less than a dab bong. Likewise, honey sticks and honey straws come in a variety of models that are more portable than a dab bong.
  • Bowl Topping
Finally, some CBD dabs like CBD shatter can be placed on top of a packed bowl. The heat should be applied to the flower in the bowl to allow the concentrate to melt from the indirect heat. This method also works well for CBD Kief.

Effects of Dabs and CBD Concentrates

Before trying CBD shatter, CBD wax, or any other CBD dab, keep these points in mind:

  • Dabs are a very potent and fast delivery method
  • New users should be extra slow and careful
  • CBD dabs will not get you high (assuming they are legal hemp products)

CBD Dabs vs CBD Vapes- Common Mistakes

Consumers may have some confusion between CBD dabs and CBD vape oil since CBD vape oil is also a type of extract product. However, CBD vape oil is its own thing. It is formulated from CBD distillate but has different ingredients added to make it suitable for vaping devices.

CBD distillate is a term used for dabs and vapes, so be careful to note which consumption method it is intended for

You definitely do not want to put CBD Oil tinctures in vapes or smoke them like dabs. Likewise, CBD dabs will not work well with vaporizers and CBD vape oil should not be used in a wax pen or dab bong.

Tips for Avoiding Common Mistakes:

  • Don’t put CBD Dabs in vapes
  • Don’t put oral CBD Oil in vapes
  • Don’t dab CBD Vape Oil, oral CBD Oil, or CBD Isolate Powder

How CBD Concentrates (Dabs) are Made

There are three main methods for extracting CBD from hemp. Those are CO2 extraction, hydrocarbon extraction, and ethanol extraction. The final product of any of these extraction methods is “CBD crude.” To make a more desirable and concentrated product, CBD crude goes through purification and refinement processes. Refinement methods vary depending on the desired end product. They generally involve processes like distillation, pressurization, and temperature (hot or cold) treatment.

Buying CBD Shatter, CBD Wax, and Other CBD Concentrates

When buying CBD concentrates, make sure the type of concentrate is appropriate for the consumption device. Also, be aware that products like CBD shatter can melt in warm temperatures. When it comes to heat exposure in shipping, there’s no way around that risk. Expedited shipping options may be of help, especially in warmer climates and seasons.

When you get your CBD concentrates, be sure to store them in a cool dark area. You will want to keep the products sealed when not in use.

Some dispensaries and specialty shops may carry CBD shatter or CBD wax. However, there is no need to go to a dispensary if you choose to order online. Plain Jane CBD concentrates can be shipped right to you (US only).
